It seems as if everyone has the best parenting tip, even if they do not have children, so it is difficult to know which is the best parenting tip. But various studies have shown that an invaluable tip is to have a solid relationship with your child. Keep the doors of communication open, and in addition to being a parent to your child, also be a friend to them.
Now keep in mind that involves wearing two hats at the same time, and sometimes the tasks that those roles dictate will conflict. You need first to be a parent – you know what is right and what is wrong, and you need to set the boundaries. And there needs to be penalties for violating those boundaries. This is hard, there is no doubt about that. You want to give your child the freedom that they want, but deep down, studies have shown that the child really wants you to set those boundaries.
If the child is old enough to understand, take the time to explain why you are doing what you are doing, why you set the boundaries where you did. This conversation needs to take place at a quiet time when neither of you are hyped up with emotion about a current situation. But taking the time to explain your reasoning and thought process also goes a long ways towards paving that road to being a friend too. The child will respect you for not yelling but taking the time to communicate your thought process.
Many times, what comes out of this is more facts that you did not know, which may cause you to change your mind or re-adjust those boundaries. This is valuable too, since it teaches the child the power of open communications with you. They will learn that the more they open up to you, the more facts you have to make a parental decision.
The bottom line is that the open doors of communication between you and your child is the best parenting tip that can be offered, and it takes pains on both parts to keep that doorway open as far as possible at all times.
