As your child gets older, you will be the lucky recipient of the teen parenting award. The teen years are when the child starts to test those boundaries that you have set for them and try to expand them as far as they can. Their hormones are raging, and quite often you will find that the base reason behind a request has something to do with the opposite sex. Keep this in mind as you take on your teen parenting role.

The best thing you can do for teen parenting is to be understanding, as much as possible. One of the most common complaints heard from teens today is that their parents do not understand them. They forget that only 10 or 15 years ago, their parents were also teens and things have not changed all that much in a wide variety of aspects.

Again, you need to keep the doors of communication wide open. You are older and wiser, but they are at an age where you can reason with them, most of the time. Sit down in a quiet place, or if that is not possible at home with the phones ringing and people around, then take your child to McDonalds or somewhere and just talk with them. Have an open and frank conversation with them. And remember that this is a two way street -- you may be unaware of some of the facts for their current crisis, which if they let you know about it, may change your view of it. Teen parenting is not a picnic, but the key to effective teen parenting is to keep those doors of communication wide open. In addition to being a parent, which is your first task, try to open be a friend to them, someone they can talk to, someone they can confide in. Take the time to remind them that you know where they are at, because you were there too at an earlier time of your life. Strangely enough, that may actually come as a shock to them!

Above all, teen parenting is most effective when yelling is not part of the conversation. A resolution or effective communication cannot occur when you are yelling at them or they are yelling at you. Calm down, then have a quiet discussion with them to explain your reasoning and thought process. Do you owe them an explanation? Technically no, but if you want to have an effective relationship with your child and embrace the concepts of effective teen parenting, you will endeavor to keep those communication doors between you and your teen as wide open as possible at all times.
